about
This track is about my friend, A.J. McCurley, who two years ago died of an accidental heroin overdose. While I personally don't condone heavy drug usage like this, the last time I saw A.J. in person, he told me he had been into some shit. I knew he had faced demons in the past. But when he spoke to me, he had a bright light that I finally saw again after his problems took hold. He told me he had kicked the habit and was trying his hardest to remain sober and I congratulated him for that. That was the last time I saw him or even really spoke to him. Fast forward to August 2013. I was sitting on my couch watching a movie when my friend Brittany Hartman texted me and asked "Did you hear about A.J.?", to which I replied that I hadn't. She then told me what happened, based off information she had heard from other people. Almost immediately, friends from the Mountain Home area started messaging me or texting me asking if I had heard. It came to me as a complete shock. Regardless of details of what actually happened, I don't consider it suicide. It may have been. Who's to say? In any case, it's taken me two years, but I always told you I'd write a song just for you, buddy. Here it is. I hope you like it. This song goes out to anyone who's lost someone they cherish in their heart, mind, body, and soul. I miss you, man. Hopefully, you're at peace wherever you are. #voteforAJ
lyrics
Have you ever felt the hands of God take something great that was close to you?
Did you ever feel abandoned or scared?
Did you feel like you were watched by owls, their wide eyes glaring under feathered cowls?
I woke up yesterday as a child but fell asleep as a tired man.
I can't believe what I have is "faith."
So call me Thomas, 'cause I can't see God.
I need something more than a book to give me proof.
I haven't the slightest of evidence.
I'm in need of a full blown truth.
When one of your angels is taken and neither his wings are left, how do we invoke flight: look towards the future now?
Look towards the future now.
Dustin is a close friend of mine and I've seen this dude's songwriting ability up close because I shared a stage with him for 8 months. Don't sleep. Millipede Antennae
